When starting to plan the interior, there are several aspects, which have to be taken into consideration. The first task is to reestimate the functions of the rooms.

 Functional aspect in interior design

Functional aspect. Usually the room functions are determined by the architect, who has planned the building, but sometimes you can evaluate the functions in your existing dwelling and find a way to arrange them more efficiently. In such a way, if the family has extended and additional space is necessary, one room apartment can be rearranged into a two room apartment, for example. Depending on the orientation of the house the living room is usually placed towards the West side, bedrooms – towards the East side and the kitchen towards the North side. The kitchen, dining room and living room can be united, if you want to have a spacious interior, or separated, if it is important for you to screen the view towards the kitchen as a household area and to prevent the smells from the kitchen coming into the living room. In small apartments even the hall and kitchen can be united to gain more space. When the functions of the rooms are determined, it is necessary to determine the functional areas. For this  purpose make a list of activities, that you would like to do in every room. Depending on the required activities set the functional areas: rest area not directly in sight from the entrance, working area in the lightest place of the room, activity area in an open area with no transitional movement, transition area in an open corridor with no obstacles etc. All the necessary functions should be comfortably installed in the room. If the space is too small, one area can combine several functions and also furniture in the room can be flexible for several functions.

 Visual aspect in interior design

Visual aspect. When the functional areas are divided, the required functions should be implemented into material interior elements. To decide, how the interior should look like, it is necessary to choose a certain design concept or style. Interior design style can be ethnic or national – devoted to a certain region’s culture and traditions and implementing it’s folklore and mentality. There are some ethnic styles, which are famous in the whole world: Scandinavian style, Japanese style, Arabic style, African style and Indian style, Mediterranean style etc.

Scandinavian interior design style

Scandinavian design is simple, usually white color dominates in combination with natural wood, glass and other natural colors.

Japanese interior design style

Japanese style is also simple, usually expressed in different shades of brown and beige colors in combination with white semitransparent glass, special Japanese lanterns and low rise seats. The rest area is usually situated on the ground level. Japanese interiors can have landscape drawings, images of dragons and hieroglyphic signs. In Japanese interior the most common materials are wood and stone.

Arabic interior design style

The Arabic style implements arc type doors, passages and windows, which are usually smaller than in other styles. Arabic interior is very secluded. It interplays with a lot of ornaments, especially from natural motives. Arabic traditional materials are ornamental tiles, stone, clay and colorful textiles. The rest area is also situated on the ground level.

African interior design style

African style interior usually is colorful, with textures of stripes and spots images of animals, hunting scenes etc. Natural materials are typical for the African style and rough surfaces.

Indian interior design style

Indian style interior is also colorful with the typical colors of orange, red and turquoise. It can have ornaments, different hanging elements, dark wood, wooden carvings, tiny glass or mirror tiles and beautiful ornamental carpets. Indian interiors have plenty of accessories – colorful pillows, wooden statues, candlesticks etc.

Apart from ethnic styles there are some international interior styles, which are commonly used in the whole world.

Minimalism interior design style

Minimalism style interior is expressed in clear lines, order, minimal use of color. All accessories of the room are built in to hide them under clear surfaces. Minimalism style interior is so simple, that it suits to any building.

High-tech interior design style

High-tech interior style is a tribute to contemporary technologies. It can have clear rectangular lines or dynamic untraditional forms. It surprises with technological solutions and contemporary materials: Plexiglas, steel and aluminium, glass, white glossy color surfaces and abundant use of light.

Industrial interior design style

Another interesting interior style is Industrial style. It exposes the construction details of the building and furniture – steel constructions, aeration pipes, cables, it plays with rough surfaces: plain concrete, rusted metal etc. Furniture on industrial wheels would suit this interior style as well as rough looking furniture – made of concrete blocks or bricks etc.

Glamour interior design style

Glamour style interior is an eclectic composition made of some vintage furniture combined with modern elements by creating a romantic atmosphere of glamour. Glamour interiors typically have shining surfaces like glass, mirror, glossy black furniture, glass or even crystal lustres, vintage carvings on doors and furniture, imposing drapes etc. The dominating colors are glossy black and saturated colors like dark chocolate brown, dark violet, purple, pink or elegant white with black and pink.

Provence interior design style

Provence style interior is romantic, with plentiful decorations. Usually it is made of light colors, decorated with wooden carvings on furniture and railings, vintage furniture, drapes with floral ornaments, a monumental fireplace is common in Provence interiors. Romantic elements are present in Provence style interior like country flowers, candles, mirrors in decorative frames, romantic handles of doors and furniture pulls.

Historical aspect in interior design

Historical aspect. If interior design has to be planned for a historical building, it is suggested to match to the historical style of the building or at least use some historical elements in a modern design. There are following most popular historical styles: starting from medieval Romanesque and Gothic styles, afterwards Renaissance and Baroque styles, Classicism, Eclecticism, which united various of the previous styles, Art Nouveau, Art Deco. A historical interior style is appropriate for buildings of the same architectural style. In a contemporary building an exact copy of a historical style would not be advisable. Interior designers use different modifications of historical styles to create modern associations with the history.

Ecological aspect in interior design

Ecological aspect concerns the use of materials as well as ecological thinking, when establishing an interior. Everybody wants to live in a healthy environment. Our ancestors used to build their dwellings of wood and isolate them with straw and other natural materials. We use chemical mixtures for paints and lacquers, synthetic carpets and live in a permanent radiation of the electromagnetic field. And then we wonder, why we have health problems, allergies, asthmas etc. To create a healthy environment, examine the materials, that you plan to use in the interior – how ecologically clean are they? What contaminants they contain? Using ecologically clean and natural materials is the first step towards a good health. On the other hand the ecological aspect concerns global thinking. What heating system, heating elements, what type of aeration do you plan? How energy saving is your dwelling? Do you sort your waste in different type litter-bins? By the lifestyle, that you lead today, you create your children’s future.

Psychological aspect in interior design

Psychological aspect is important in each interior because the designer’s aim is to create a cosy and psychologically comfortable environment. The physical properties of the dwelling are important – the amount of light, spaciousness, silence, warmth. If the physical factors are not satisfying, there are design tricks, how to make the space look bigger, lighter or warmer. Subjective psychological factors are also important: sense of security, the perceived amount of color, contrast, the perceived harmony of the design, the logical structure, complexity, mystery, uniqueness, multifunctionality, privacy, lightness, spaciousness, and the choice of materials. Each of these factors can rise positive or negative emotions. Therefore it is important to achieve an optimal level for each of the listed factors to create a comfortable habitat for the interior inhabitants.

Symbolic aspect in interior design

Symbolic aspect in interior is expressed in the space personality, the designer’s task is to create an individual soul for the interior. The interior space should live in one rhythm with the owner, it should express the owner’s preferences in color, style and interior accessories. To add a personality to the interior it can be designed with a symbolic meaning and symbolic elements can be implemented such as symbolic statues of gods, famous personalities etc. Interior can also symbolically reflect a music style, for example, or an idea. It can create different symbolic associations, which is especially important when designing company offices.

Economical aspect in interior design

Economical aspect concerns the budget of the interior establishment. Depending on the budget the material choice should be made. Marble kitchen surface or floor tiles, design bathroom equipment, natural wood parquet will look elegant, but also will be expensive.
